Who is Jesus?
Jesus is the son of God. He was born of the virgin Mary; trading his divinity for humanity. He lived on earth for 33 years experiencing all the same human emotions and temptations that we do, and yet he was without sin. He was crucified (death on a cross) and after 3 days he was resurrected to life, thus defeating death. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God, our heavenly Father. He is coming back at a date and time unknown to welcome all of his followers to an eternity with him.
Jesus is our teacher. As was Jewish tradition, Jesus formally began his earthly ministry around the age of 30. For 3 years he was a rabbi (aka teacher) who taught his followers (aka disciples) about God and their heavenly kingdom. He not only taught, but he also performed many miracles to prove that he is the son of God. Jesus also sent his Holy Spirit who now dwells with us to continue teaching us. The life of Jesus and his teachings are recorded in the Bible, in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John – otherwise know as the gospels.
Jesus is the prophesied messiah, the long anticipated savior. He was present at the creation of our world and humanity. He was prophesized over and over again to come and redeem humanity. He has promised to prepare a place for us in heaven and return to defeat satan. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He [Jesus] was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:1-5 NIV)
Jesus is the embodiment of love. The very first humans, Adam and Eve, listened to satan, going against God’s command and introduced sin to our world. Sin separates us from God. God does not want his beloved creation to be separated from Him, and therefore he provided a way for atonement of sin – a blood sacrifice. For millennials animal sacrifices were offered for the forgiveness of sins, but the people always returned to sin and rebellion. Something different was needed to ensure once and for all the atonement of sin and reconciliation for God’s creation to himself for eternity. Thus, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 NIV)
Jesus being fully divine while fully human, knew his assignment on earth. The night that Jesus was arrested and crucified, he expressed his love for humanity in a prayer to God. Read the prayers of Jesus to God the Father and you will feel the unconditional love that he has for you …
“I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.
“I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. or them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.
“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
“Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.
“Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”

A Simple Prayer
Dear Jesus, I believe that you are the son of God and I want you to be my Lord. Thank you for your sacrifice on the cross. Please forgive me of all my sins. Thank you for your resurrection, and that you have sent your Holy Spirit to be with me until you return. Please teach me how to follow your commands. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
