Finding a Church Home
You were never meant to walk with Jesus alone.
Finding a church can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re new to church or have been away for a while. Here you’ll discover why Christian community matters, what to look for in a healthy church, and how to take your next step.
Why Church?
The church is not simply a building or a Sunday event. In the Bible, the church is a family of believers joined together through Jesus Christ.
Scripture teaches us to gather for worship, prayer, teaching, encouragement, fellowship, and service. We need other believers to help us grow, remain steadfast, use our gifts, and remember that we are not walking alone.
- The Church is God’s family.
- We worship together.
- We learn together.
- We encourage one another.
- We serve together.
Therefore encourage one another and build one another up. 1 Thessalonians 5:11
We Gather Together
And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together … but encouraging one another. Hebrews 10:24–25
We Belong to One Body
First Corinthians 12 teaches that followers of Jesus are different parts of one body. Every believer matters, and every believer has something to contribute.
We Learn and Grow Together
Acts 2:42 describes the early believers as devoted to: The apostles’ teaching, Fellowship, Breaking bread, Prayer
Jesus demonstrated the importance of community – a people who worship, grow in God’s Word, love, serve, and persevere together.
What Should I Look For?
No church is perfect, but healthy churches share certain characteristics. As you visit, prayerfully look beyond the building and the music. Listen to the teaching, observe how people care for one another, and ask whether this is a place where you can worship, grow, and serve alongside others.
📖 Bible-Centered Teaching
Is the Bible is faithfully taught? Look for a church where the Bible is opened, explained, and applied faithfully. Jesus and the truth of Scripture should remain central.
🤝 Loving Community
Do people genuinely know and care for one another? Notice whether people genuinely welcome, encourage, and care for one another. Healthy community grows through relationships, prayer, and fellowship.
🌍 Missions & Outreach
Does the church serves locally and globally? Look for a church that serves its local community and supports the work of sharing the gospel beyond its walls.
👨👩👧👦 Families
Are children and youth are loved and taught? A healthy church invests in the next generation. If you have children, look for a ministry that is welcoming, safe, and grounded in God’s Word, helping kids grow to know and love Jesus.
🌱 Growing Together
Are there paths to growth besides Sunday service? Following Jesus is a lifelong journey. Look for opportunities to grow through Bible studies, small groups, classes, mentoring, and prayer. (You may hear this called discipleship—simply learning to follow Jesus.)
❤️ Serving
Does everyone have opportunities to use their gifts? God has uniquely gifted every believer to encourage and serve others. A healthy church provides opportunities to use those gifts in ways that bless the church, the community, and the world.
How Do I Find a Church Home?
Now that you know some of the core characteristics of a healthy church, here’s how to begin your search with confidence. Every church is unique, and it’s okay if it takes visiting a few before you find a church home where you feel encouraged to worship, grow in God’s Word, and serve alongside other believers. As you search, continue to pray and trust that the Lord will faithfully guide your steps.
Before You Visit
✓ Pray for wisdom.
✓ Read their Statement of Faith.
✓ Explore their social media.
✓ Remember no church is perfect.
✓ Plan to visit more than once.
Visit 3 Sundays
WEEK 1 – Attend with an open heart.
WEEK 2 – Listen carefully to God’s Word.
WEEK 3 – Introduce yourself and ask about next steps.

Take Your Fist Step
Finding a church home begins with a single step. Search for churches near you, explore their websites, read their Statement of Faith, and take a look at their recent social media posts. As you pray, ask the Lord to guide you to a church where you can grow in His Word, build meaningful relationships, and serve alongside other believers.
If a church offers a Plan Your Visit option, don’t hesitate to use it. The Welcome Team will be expecting you and can help you find your way around, making your first visit a little more comfortable.
